Don’t Make These Common Home Decor Mistakes

January 05, 2013

chicago new homes decor adviceIf your new year’s resolution involves repainting walls and replacing furniture, you might want to avoid making these common decor mistakes:

  • Too many photos. Sharing memories is great, but it’s easy to go overboard and too many framed photos on a wall can make a room look smaller. The better option is to stick to a few select picture frames, and then keep the rest of your family photos in a well-organized album.
  • Too many cables. Many of today’s family rooms are equipped with Blu-Ray players, surround sound speakers and game consoles, and these wires aren’t always the most attractive home accessories. Keep cords hidden by using a cord cover that matches the color of your walls.
  • Outdated furniture. This is one of the biggest home decor no-nos, but also one of the most common. Even if you’re on a budget, there’s no reason why you can’t keep up with the latest trends. If you don’t want to replace an entire furniture set, find smaller ways to spruce up your living space. A new comforter can enhance any bedroom, or modern drawer pulls can add new life to your kitchen and bath cabinets. You can even purchase a modern lamp for that old table you just can’t get rid of!
  • Clutter. Yes, there can be such a thing as too many home accessories. In the new year, try re-organizing your home and streamlining your decor to avoid an overly “busy” look.

Even if you’re on a budget in 2013, giving your home a makeover is one resolution worth keeping!
