Create a Save File of Your Life Before Disaster
Creating secondary backups of important files should be second nature by now, from saving things to the cloud to having a safe deposit box; but when was the last time you made a “saved file” of your home? With homeowners insurance, you can do just the thing!
The Equifax Finance Blog explains how to make the most out of homeowners insurance protection for the items within your home in the new blog, “
How to Create an Inventory for Homeowners Insurance.” Start by making a list, either room by room or by category of items. The list needs to be relatively detailed so that its value can be determined for the purposes of insurance in the event that you do experience a disaster. Make sure that particularly expensive or unique items have additional details since they may be harder to replace.
Once you have a list, it is time to make sure you visually document the items with photographs or videos. Take multiple photos of each room so you capture all of the documented items. If you do video, it can be easier to make moving shots while narrating which items are in frame so that it is easier to identify item by item. Then, make sure to store your list and photos or videos somewhere safe, preferably off-site – you don’t want to lose the backups in the same tragedy that befalls your home, after all!
