Parents of Richmond New Homes Await School District Decision

January 24, 2013

Richmond new homesAs children in nearby Richmond new homes returned to school for the spring semester, school board officials of the Nippersink School District Two were still making decisions about whether or not they could issue a tax abatement and accomplish all of its goals. In a recent meeting, some board members were still unsure of the suggested $3 million abatement and want a more comprehensive plan of the school district’s goals. Concern over making a decision too quickly and without enough information has caused the board to put off making a decision until closer to the March deadline.

In addition to the tax abatement, board members are looking at maintenance needs including replacing doors and sinks, adding air conditioning and security upgrades. Board members that have concerns have proposed a facilities audit to get a better picture of when things will need to be replaced and the actual costs.

They are also considering bringing back programs that were cut when the district was in financial straits, such as the foreign language program. In order to gauge interest level, a survey will go out to staff and parents asking them if the foreign language program should be reinstated and if so, at what grade level.

Decisions about the foreign language program and security improvements are considered priorities and research, such as the survey, are already being conducted to determine costs.

The outcome of these decisions will directly affect residents of Gerstad Builders’ Richmond new home community, The Trails of Pheasant Ridge, as children of this particular neighborhood attend schools in Nippersink School District Two. Parents are welcome to provide input to the school board and are encouraged to complete the survey.
