HBA Visited by NAHB President and CEO

Jerry Howard, president and CEO of NAHB, and Carol Morgan, Managing Partner of mRELEVANCE

Recently, the Home Builders Association in Atlanta was visited by the leader of the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), Jerry Howard. The president and CEO presented information about the organization’s plans for 2013.

Howard talked about what the NAHB is doing to get the housing market back on track. Efforts include advising a compromise between entities who invest in securities generated by American mortgages and the government programs which back these instruments. This is important because the compromise will help the entire real estate market, not just new homes by making sure there is continued access to affordable mortgage financing.

Another important effort is that many EPA and OSHA regulations are in the process of being implemented. These could affect home builders and developers and the NAHB is monitoring their status in order to ensure that they do not hamper the ongoing improvement in the homebuilding industry.

Howard also discussed how 2013 is the year for tax reform. Items that could be changed and are being watched by the NAHB, are the mortgage interest deduction and depreciation of real estate investment assets. Both of these are items that are important to both the industry as well as individual homeowners and investors.

The Home Builders Association of Greater Chicago (HBAGC) can learn from Howard’s speech. By coming together, we can all help the NAHB protect the interests of both home builders and home owners.
