Avoid These Major Chicago Home Remodeling Mistakes

February 08, 2013

Home Renovation BlackboardConsidering Chicago home remodeling? Before you get started, make sure you don’t make any of these major mistakes.

  • Not hiring a contractor for big jobs. A little updating here and there is one thing, but a major overhaul of a kitchen or basement could be more than you bargained for, especially if you need to reinstall any plumbing.
  • Hiring an unlicensed contractor. Sure, it’s great to collect contractor recommendations via word of mouth. But, no matter who your friends recommend, always make sure that the person or organization is accredited by the Better Business Bureau. In 2011, the Better Business Bureau received more than 6,000 complaints about general contractors, so make sure to do your research.
  • Improper measuring. Can being off by an inch really make that much of a difference? The answer is yes, it can. If you don’t hire a pro, especially when measuring trickier areas such as windows, you could end up delaying your entire project because of problems due to improper sizing.
  • Don’t skimp on cabinetry. Cabinets are one of the most common renovation projects, and it is also the renovation where people tend to cut corners. Cheaper cabinets can be more difficult to install and secure, thus costing you time in the long run.
