Green Design Trends from the International Builders’ Show

February 12, 2013

Green Home and City BackgroundSaving energy is in and money-draining appliances are out. At the 2013 International Builders’ Show in Las Vegas, those browsing the showroom floor might have noticed even more energy efficient items available than in the past. Here’s a rundown of some of the latest green equipment.

  • Bioethanol fireplaces and candles. Odorless and smokeless fireplaces and candles are the way of the future. No need to worry about unwanted ash or toxins in the air. Bioethanol fireplaces also tend to have a more streamlined, modern look.
  • Hi-tech fridges. Fridge manufacturers are becoming more conscious of the environment on multiple levels. GE recently launched a fridge that promises to filter out any pharmaceuticals left in tap water. Some refrigerators are also equipped with features such as LED lights and tight-sealing technology that lessens the amount of cold air that escapes when doors are opened.
  • Eco-friendly grills. Sure, now that we’re in the dead of winter, thinking about those summer barbeques may seem a bit strange. But, it’s never too early to start your grill shopping, and this could be the year when you purchase a ‘greener’ grill. Some manufacturers, such as FlameDisk, are now selling corn-based and ethanol grills, which are much better for the environment than old-fashioned charcoal ones.
  • Green saunas. For homeowners installing these big ticket items, make sure you are choosing sustainable options. Manufacturers are now making saunas out of eco-friendly materials, such as recycled wood and non-toxic adhesives.
  • Eco-friendly wine cellars. These new home products are also being constructed out of sustainable wood options, such as natural cork. Though wine cellars are not part of the ENERGY STAR program, many manufacturers are still working hard to ensure that cooling equipment is as efficient and cost-effective as possible.

If you’re in the market for any of the above items, it’s definitely important to do your research and find the most sustainable options possible.
