Residents of McHenry County Neighborhoods go Bald for a Cause
In 1999, three coworkers came up with an idea to shave their heads for donations to raise funds for kids with cancer. In 2000, Tim Kenny, John Bender and Enda McDonnell, hosted the first St. Baldrick’s event at their industry’s annual St. Patrick’s Day party, shaving 19 heads and raising $104,000 to fund the research of the Children’s Oncology Group. Today, under the official title of the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, communities across the nation participate in annual shaves to go bald for a cause and raise funds to donate to childhood cancer research. In 2012, the organization celebrated a milestone, reaching $100 million dollars in raised funds. The St. Baldrick’s Foundation invites residents of McHenry County neighborhoods to join them in the fight against cancer at the McHenry Community Shave.
Sponsored by the McHenry County High School and hosted at the West Main school gym, the community shave is scheduled for Thursday, March 14th beginning at 5:00 p.m. As a McHenry County home builder, Gerstad Builders encourages residents to participate in this local event. If you are not sure about shaving your head, you can buy t-shirts or send money with your student to school, as several local schools have put together teams for this event.
The McHenry Community Shave is supported by McHenry County school districts 156, 36 and 15, as well as the City of McHenry Police Department, Fire Department and Character Counts. McHenry has set a goal for their 2013 St. Baldrick’s Efforts to earn the honor of having the largest number of shavees in the world, so as a community, let’s make this happen.
Thursday, March 14th come out and shave your head for a good cause. If you have any questions, please visit the McHenry High School District 156 website.
Gerstad Builders is excited to be a part of a community that supports organizations such as the St. Baldrick’s Foundation. Come be a part of the community today when you purchase a McHenry new home from Gerstad Builders. For more information, visit www.GerstadBuilders.com.
