McHenry County Home Builder Offers Multi-Generation Home Design

McHenry County home builderWhen children leave home for work, school or to start their own family, many think it is the last time they will live with their parents, but that isn’t always the case. According to the Census Bureau, the number of households with three generations under one roof is growing and was up 30 percent between 2000 and 2010. With those numbers, it is safe to say that the number of parents moving in with their children has continued to grow over the past three years. Whether this transition to living under one roof has come from financial stress, health reasons or just love, the need for in-law suites has become increasingly more important. McHenry County home builder, Gerstad Builders has recognized this need and is happy to announce that they are now offering the Multi-Generation Prestwick plan.

To create this multi-generation plan, Gerstad Builders started with one of their most popular ranch designs, the Prestwick, and added a suite that provides comfort and privacy for adults who are not quite ready for a retirement home. Originally, the Prestwick plan highlights 1,567 square feet of living space with three bedrooms and two bathrooms. The new in-law suite is more than just a guest bedroom with a spacious bedroom, large walk-in closet, handicap accessible bathroom and sitting area. The doorway between the in-law suite and kitchen is 36-inches wide, perfect for wheelchair-users.

One of the biggest issues that Roger Gerstad, president of Gerstad Builders, had to face when designing this new space was privacy. To successfully accomplish a sense of privacy, the door and shared wall between the two living areas are sound proofed. Additionally, the suite features a private entrance allowing guests to visit their loved ones without disturbing the entire family.

The new suite has been carefully designed to blend in with the home’s original architecture. Located behind an added third garage bay and adjacent to the standard home’s laundry room, kitchen and breakfast area, the 566 square foot in-law suite is completely unnoticeable. From the outside, no one will be able to know that two or three generations are living under one roof.

Taking care of loved ones can be hard and stressful if you do not have a well-designed living area that provides enough space and privacy for everyone. The Multi-Generation Prestwick Plan is available at all four of Gerstad Builders’ communities. Base pricing for the Prestwick varies depending on the community, but ranges from $174,990 to $214,990. The in-law suite option adds $65,000 to the base price.

The in-law suite option is currently available on the Prestwick pan only, but if the Multi-Generation Prestwick Plan is successful, Gerstad plans to offer the in-law suite option on all of its other ranch and two-story home designs.
