Housing Deals Abound for First-Time Homebuyers in Chicago

April 02, 2013

Chicago real estate for first time homebuyersFor those who are ready to own their first piece of Chicago real estate and have a budget of less than $200,000, there are amazing deals to be had inside the city. Chicago Magazine has some great insights into places that are perfect to put your roots down.

While seven years of sinking prices have been difficult on the market, it’s never been a better time to be a buyer, especially if you are looking for solid housing stock near trendy neighborhoods with easy access to public transportation. For instance, you can find amazing condo options in Avondale (median price $118,000), Edison Park (median price $91,000) and Portage Park (median price $62,000). Explore these communities carefully as housing options can differ block to block in these dynamic communities.

If you are looking to buy a house, there are a wealth of options outside the city for those seeking homes priced under $200,000. In Brookfield, buyers can find brick bungalows and postwar Georgian-style homes around the Salt Creek forest preserve with a median price of $162,000. Older ranch homes, split levels and even new construction townhomes in Des Plaines benefit from good schools and a variety of restaurants with the median price a higher, but still affordable $190,000. Finally, Forest Park has its own funky feel with a CTA Blue Line connection to the Windy City and older brick homes and newer raised ranches from around $160,000.
