Think Outside the City for Chicago Move Up Home Deals

April 03, 2013

Move up Chicago Real Estate DealsThe message is clear that now is the time to buy, with prices rising and interest rates still at historic lows. But, if you have decided that 2013 is the perfect time to find your new home, the question is still, where should it be? Thankfully, there are a lot of options when it comes to a Chicago move up home, as the prices for homes that are large enough to grow in and that offer outdoor space to call your own, have become more affordable than ever in the suburbs.

If your budget for a move-up home is modest, say no more than $350,000, you can find excellent homes in these surburbs:

  • In Skoke, where there is a new CTA Yellow Line station, public library, Oakton community college and more, prices are down 44 percent from the peak. You can find abodes like a midcentury bungalow or Georgian-style home easily at a median price of $225,000.
  • Lincolnwood hosts an excellent school district just north of Chicago, and just within reach of Evanston. Rustic homes with three or more bedrooms and in need of TLC can be found for $285,000. Prices are also down 44 percent from peak, but areas around the Bryn Mawr Country Club have done better at retaining their value.
  • Park Ridge offers nature preserves, the picturesque Des Planes River and first-rate schools with homes that are around 38 percent less from years past. Homes here are within reach at an asking price of $335,000 to $345,000 depending on how close you want to live to the heart of town and the Metra station.
