When it comes to being ready, having your finances in order and knowing where to look first among the dozens of communities out there are your best bets.

Here are some tips on where you should be searching from Chicago magazine and Chicago Agent magazine:

  • First Time Homebuyer: Portgage Park (condo), Edison Park (condo), Avondale (condo), Forest Park, Brookfield and Des Plaines are all great communities with quality homes under $200,000.
  • Move-Up Buyer: Skokie, Lincolnwood, Park Ridge, Barrington, Clarendon Hills and Wayne offer move-up homes under $400,000 with amenities and scholastic support that growing families need.
  • Second Home Buyer: Second home buyers know they want a home away from home, and there are wonderful condo options available in East Randolph Street, Printers Row and Old Town all between $200,000 and $300,000.
  • Downsize Homebuyer: The list of places to downsize to is growing in both the city and the suburbs, and without having to worry about school support or commuting times, you can find gems in Edgewater, Woodstock, Bridgeport, Grayslake, North Park and Willowbrook.
