On Wednesday, June 19, Equifax hosted a special webinar titled “

Is Now the Time to Buy a Home?” Real estate experts Steve Cook, former vice president of public affairs for the National Association of Realtors and Equifax Chief Economist Amy Crews Cutts discussed the question many have been facing for years: is now the time to buy?

One of the main take-aways from the discussion was for buyers to take their time. This advice isn’t new and it is certainly intuitive, but surprisingly often, shoppers get caught up in the process and rush into a buying decision, which is a major no-no, according to real estate and financial experts. The advice from Cook and Cutts in the Webinar was no different. They recommend buyers considering entering the market now watch the market for a few months, research home values and prices and heat up their search closer to fall – when buyers can get even better savings on a home purchase, as sellers will be more eager to sell their homes before the holidays. Additionally, more homes will hit the market over summer, increasing supply and bringing down home prices.  This time should be used to evaluate what is important to buyers – what location, features and amenities are most important. Waiting will also provide buyers with extra time to build up their credit and savings to put them in the best financial position for mortgage applications.
