Chicago first-time homebuyers

What are points? Is a down payment different than closing costs? What is an ARM? How can I increase my credit score?

These are just a few of the questions that will be answered during educational seminars we created specifically for the first-time homebuyer. Currently, programs are scheduled in Chicago, Palatine, Naperville, Schaumburg, Carol Stream, Crystal Lake and Lombard, with more dates and locations to be added in the upcoming months. These are free of charge, and open to anyone who is planning on buying a home or just interested in learning about the process.

I launched StartingPoint Realty in 2004 after being frustrated during our own first-time home buying experience. I found the process to be disjointed and intimidating. It was clear the home seller had the negotiating advantage and the professional representation. I thought, “I can do better than that,” and so I learned everything I could about home buying, and then focused on sharing that information with as many people as possible.

Each seminar is conducted by a two-person team that includes one of our brokers and a mortgage professional with no sales pitches involved. The sessions offer a step-by-step guide to buying a home, educating attendees about the entire process from initiating a property search through closing.

Topics covered include the roles of the lender or mortgage broker and real estate agent, mortgage preapprovals, purchase contracts, negotiations, attorneys, home inspections, real estate taxes, homeowner’s associations and more. Attendees also will have an opportunity to have questions answered after the presentation.
