‘Ferris Bueller’ House Back on Market for $1.5M

August 08, 2013

The mid-century modern, steel-and-glass house in Highland Park that gained prominence in the 1986 classic film “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” came back on the market on Monday — for the first time in two and a half years — with a $1.5 million asking price.

'Ferris Bueller's Day Off' houseThe house and its separate glass-enclosed auto pavilion, which perches over a railing on steel pilings, have been off the market since 2011. The property first was listed in 2009 for $2.3 million but found no takers. It later was reduced to $1.8 million and then to $1.65 million before coming off the market in 2011 for some light rehab work. For a time, the property remained off the market but still informally listed.

Now, the Rose family, who are the only owners the property ever has had, relisted the property on Monday for a new, lower price. The four-bedroom main house was built in 1953 and designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe disciple A. James Speyer, while the pavilion was designed by David Haid and constructed about 20 years later to house an exotic car collection.

In a classic scene late in the film “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,” the titular character’s best friend, Cameron Frye, sends a classic 1961 Ferrari crashing through the pavilion’s plate glass windows into a ravine.

Features in the pavilion include a kitchen, a bath and room for four cars.  The owners recently have renovated the pavilion’s windows and steel.

Listing agent Meladee Hughes of Coldwell Banker declined to comment on the listing.
