U of C, Northwestern Earn High Marks in U.S. News Rankings

 - BloombergUniversity of Chicago and Northwestern University are among the top 15 colleges in the nation again as ranked by U.S. News & World Report.

U of C, in Hyde Park, was tied at No. 5 with Stanford University. Last year, U of C ranked No. 4, tied with with Columbia University.

Evanston-based Northwestern landed at No. 12 again. It tied with Johns Hopkins University.

The rankings, released today, are based on 16 measurements in areas that include peer assessment, alumni giving rate, faculty resources and the performance of graduates. The magazine culls that information from surveys sent to schools and college and high school counselors.

The University of Chicago declined to comment on its 2014 ranking. A Northwestern representative was not available for comment.

University of Notre Dame tied for 18th with Rice University. The two schools were tied with Vanderbilt University last year at No. 17.

The University of Illinois at Chicago showed the largest improvement among Chicago-area schools in the ranking. It rose 19 spots to No. 128, where it tied with five other schools including Washington State University. UIC was No. 147 last year

DePaul University also jumped more than 10 spots. It was No. 121, up from No. 134 last year.

Illinois Institute of Technology, which is trying to improve its national reputation, moved up four spots to No. 109.

Northwestern, U of C, IIT and Loyola also landed on the list of best value schools.

University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Northwestern and Northern Illinois University were also recognized for certain undergraduate programs.

Here are the top 10 schools in the U.S., followed by last year’s ranking in parenthesis. Chicago-area schools are in bold:
