Chicago Ranked as Top 10 Safest U.S. City from Natural Disasters

September 27, 2013

Chicago homeowners relax safely from natural disastersChicago home buyers can rest easy knowing that while it may have the title of the Windy City, there’s little to fear when it comes to natural disasters around the loop. So few actually, that Chicago was cited by Trulia recently as one of the top ten safest places to live if you’re afraid of hurricanes, tornadoes, fire and other damaging acts of nature. Data was provided the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, U.S. Forest Service and FEMA’s National Flood Insurance Program to find the safest bets for real estate when it comes to disasters.

The list cites Chicago’s biggest natural disasters are its snowstorms, which the city is well-prepared to deal with. The most recent large snowstorm, the 2011 Groundhog’s Day blizzard, trapped cars on Lake Shore Drive and largely shut down the city, but it was only for the day. The blizzard was the third-worst storm in recent history, but the damage was controlled and the city didn’t suffer as it would have from a third-worst fire or earthquake.

Chicago joins other cities on the list, including three in Ohio, that generally only have to worry about heavy storms and man-made disasters, like recovering from the recession. While Chicago is on the rebound, there are still a wide number of ways to save on housing through government initiatives, as well as through many great deals that can still be found for home buyers looking for Chicago real estate.
