Chicago Ranked one of the Top 10 Most Energy-Efficient Cities

October 03, 2013

Chicago real estate green trendsThe American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy has ranked America’s 34 largest cities on energy efficiency, and Chicagoland came in at number nine! This ranking came from five key areas, and one area in which  Chicago ranked highly that will please Chicago real estate buyers was energy transparency. Chicago requires that home energy use be disclosed as part of real estate transactions.

The Midwest Real Estate Data Multiple Listing Service helps real estate professionals to comply with this requirement by gathering the monthly and annual electricity and gas costs from MyHomeEQ.com. From there, the system estimates costs over time and provides them as a part of every listing so homebuyers can have an idea of what the true expected costs on their new home will be.

Taking a responsible position on energy costs is helping Chicago not only be a leader in energy efficiency across the country, but helping to raise more responsible citizens. Sharing knowledge about costs can help buyers seek out more efficient homes and plan for more energy-efficient upgrades for homes that they purchase. These energy-efficient upgrades often have many benefits, including tax rebates, lower monthly costs and more that can lead to even more money coming back into the local economy so everyone wins.
