November 14, 2013

Most Chicago new homes residents can walk to has released its 2014 ratings after having reviewed 10,000 neighborhoods in almost 3,000 cities in the United States, Canada and Australia; and Chicago has placed in the top 10 for the U.S.! With a score of 74.8, Chicago took sixth place in the top 10 with neighborhoods like Near North, Printers Row and the Gold Coast leading the Windy City in walkability.

The score of 74.8 is also thanks to Chicago’s walkable downtown and many walkable neighborhoods, connected by great city transportation in the form of the ‘L’ and Metra Rail systems. Residents of new homes in Chicago can stroll through Millennium Park, shop the Magnificent Mile, or set sail on the Great Lakes at the Navy Pier with ease, on foot or by using mass transit. Studies showed that Chicago homeowners can walk to an average of four eateries (restaurants, bars or coffee shops) within five minutes, and most errands can be accomplished on foot.

With the L and the Metra, Chicago also earned a 65 on our transit score for 178 bus, 11 rail and 8 subway lines. In addition, there’s a strong ride share presence, with 629 car shares from Hertz On Demand, RelayRides, Zipcar, I-GO and Getaround.

While on your search for your next new home in Chicago, be sure to consider your options that don’t involve a vehicle – you’ll be healthier for it, and wealthier for not having to worry about parking, gas and other automobile-related expenses.
