Don’t Go it Alone Out There in your Real Estate Search

April 20, 2014

Team of real estate prosTempted as you may be to go it alone in your housing hunt, there are plenty of professionals out there to help – and there’s a reason these people are the authority when it comes to housing. Of course, each professional has his or her own respective areas of specific expertise within their profession, so it pays to find the right ones for your house hunt in Chicago.

First, you want to find a great lender – while you may think you want to find an agent first, finding a good lender right away can help you find out if you are ready to enter the market or not. A great lender can also help you find the mortgage product that is right for you, and can guide you through the complicated process of mortgage preapproval and financing. You’ll find a good one by referral usually – talking to friends, family and co-workers that have bought or sold recently and have had positive experiences. If you can’t find a solid recommendation, you’ll want to check in on at least three: a national lender, a regional bank and a credit union or community bank, to learn about each of your options.

Next, you want to find an Illinois real estate agent or brokerage that can help you pound the pavement and provide you with local real estate information and homes on the market as soon as they come up. You’ll be spending a lot of time with your real estate professional, so be sure to pick one you like as you’ll be with them from the initial discovery all the way through closing. You can also ask family and friends for recommendations for a great real estate agent or you can look at who is carrying listings (by checking out the for sale signs) in the areas you’re looking to buy. It’s important to meet with and interview your potential choices, though, and test the agent’s knowledge. You want to make sure you’re working with the expert for your area and price point.

What other real estate professionals would you recommend buyers research either at the onset of or during their home search? Let us know in the comments!
