Chicago Proud to Celebrate Earth Day with One of the Greenest Communities in the US

Chicago GreenHomesThere’s plenty to be proud of when it comes to going green in the Windy City – and it’s not just the river being dyed each St. Patrick’s Day! This Earth Day, we’re proud to share that in a recent study by real estate website Redfin, one of Chicago’s neighborhoods, Valley View, was named the most green neighborhood in the United States when it comes to environmentally-friendly homes.

The study from Redfin checked to see how many homes in 20 metropolitan markets have environmentally friendly building modifications and features such as solar panels, low-flow faucets, dual-pane windows, energy-efficient appliances, environmental ratings and certification programs such as ENERGY STAR®, “Built Green” and LEED, which stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. The ranking is based on the proportion of “green” listings out of total listings in the neighborhood over the past two years.

Valley View in Chicago ranked number one, with 39 percent of homes having green features. Humboldt Park was also listed among Chicago’s top green communities, but was out of the running in the top ten, which also included communities from Texas, North Carolina, Washington, Colorado, Georgia and Oregon.

In addition to the feel good and environmental impact of using less energy and resources, there are many other reasons to go green. For instance, green homes sell for more. Overall, the median sale price of homes with green features was $47,600 higher than for homes without green features. Green features also mean more savings over life, as less energy and water use means lower monthly bills.
