What Chicago Elementary Schools are Going International Baccalaureate?

April 22, 2014

 - The Emanuel administration today announced plans to expand the International Baccalaureate (IB) program at five elementary schools, making the academically rigorous curriculum available to as many as 1,500 students.

The IB program, which places a special emphasis on writing, is a favorite of Mayor Rahm Emanuel, who likes to tout that Chicago has more IB schools than any school district in the county. The expansion is intended to increase the number of elementary schools that will feed students to the Chicago seven high schools with complete IB programs, including Lincoln Park High School.

Certification by the Geneva-based IB foundation typically takes three years, city officials said.

Four Chicago schools will begin the application process in the 2014-15 school year to offer establish what IB calls Middle Years Programmes, which start at age 11 through 16, according to a news release issued by the administration and the Chicago Public Schools. Those schools are:

• Louis A. Agassiz Elementary School, 2851 N. Seminary Ave.

• Christian Ebinger Elementary School, 7350 W. Pratt Ave.

• Bernhard Moos Elementary School, 1711 N California Ave.

• William H. Seward Communication Arts Academy Elementary, 4600 S. Hermitage Ave.

A fifth school, Helen Peirce International Studies Elementary School, 1423 W. Bryn Mawr Ave.,is expanding its IB program to include students up to age 12. That would make Peirce the city’s eighth elementary school with a full IB program.

While seven Chicago high schools offer a complete IB curriculum, eight schools offer a portion of the program. Chicago schools that offer IB serve more than 15,000 students, a small fraction of the school system’s total enrollment 400,000 students.

The IB program was founded in 1968. More than 3,700 schools offer IB programs worldwide, according to the foundation’s website.
