Another Hands-Free Technology Comes to the Home

May 09, 2014

Bathroom remodel ideaIf you’re considering upgrades to your home either to put it on the market or to get the most efficient use out of it, you’re no doubt aware that the two most popular areas of the home to upgrade are the kitchen and bathroom. Kitchens and bathrooms tend to date a home, and upgrades can go a long way toward impressing buyers. While there are tons of kitchen and bath upgrade options, there’s a new one we’ve just heard about from Kohler that brings the commercial experience home.

We’re talking about, of course, hands-free toilets. New technology from Kohler is going to be available in their electromagnetically-activated touch-less toilet for their popular Sans Souci and Cimarron models of thrones. If you aren’t yet in the market for a new most-used chair in your home, there’s good news, too – Kohler is offering a $99 upgrade that works with most toilets to retrofit hands-free flush to your current porcelain privy.

The good news is that this new technology won’t waste water like many of the common commercial hands-free devices. This is because Kohler is using an emerging sensing technology on the top of your toilet that “projects an electromagnetic field that is both extremely accurate and reliable.” The result is a precise system that only flushes when you wave your hand into that field, compared to the beam technology of most commercial toilets that can cause a flush if you are simply shifting positions.

It’s worth noting that this hands-free system does not yet work with a top-mount dual-flush style, so you will either have to hold off or decide  between the water efficiency of dual-flush and the comfort and impressive action of the hands-free.
