What’s Trending in Midwestern New Homes?

June 09, 2014

new home with three-car garageThe United States Census Bureau recently published a report on the regional variations of newly built housing. The report compared different regions of the United States based on factors such as home square footage, number of bathrooms, garage size and more. Taking a closer look, one can see how the Midwest fared in comparison to the rest of the country.

The most interesting finding from the Census is that although Midwestern new homes tend to have lower square-footage, they are the most likely to have three-car garages. The country as a whole has a median new home square-footage of 2,384. The Midwest ranked the lowest of all the regions with a median of 2,177 square feet while the South ranked the highest at 2,469 square feet.

This lack of square footage is contrasted by a greater amount of garage space. In the Midwest, 38 percent of new homes have garages built for three or more cars, which can be expected due to the weather and location of the region. The Midwest experiences colder winters and more snow than the rest of the country, therefore many homes need the extra garage space to store snow blowers and other winter necessities.

Overall, the Midwest came in with the lowest average new home contract price at $255,700. This is more than $100,000 less than the highest average of $365,700, which is found in the Northeast.
