The community is surrounded by the Chicago River to the west and north, Lake Michigan to the east and Roosevelt Road to the south. It is a major business center and hosts the Chicago Board of Trade and Chicago Mercantile Exchange, and it also includes Grant Park, many hotels and restaurants, the Art Institute of Chicago and many other major tourist attractions.

The Loop was once home to the first skyscraper in the world, the Home Insurance Building, but it was demolished in 1931. It is now home to the Willis Tower, which was once the tallest building in the world, but now stands at number eight. However, the Willis Tower is the tallest building in Chicago’s beautiful skyline. The Loop is also home to the Loop Retail Historic District, which includes Chicago’s former Marshall Field’s department store, now known as Macy’s Inc.

Chicago’s lakefront in the Loop is perhaps the most active place in Chicago. The Loop is home to a large urban park called Grant Park. This 319 acre park is located in Chicago’s central business district, and its most popular tourist attractions are Millennium Park, Buckingham Fountain, the Art Institute of Chicago and the Museum Campus.

  • Millennium Park is located at the northwest corner of Grant Park, and it is an award-winning center for music, art, landscape design and architecture. In addition, Millennium Park is home to the famous Cloud Gate sculpture, also known as “The Bean.”
  • In the middle of Grant Park is Buckingham Fountain, one of the world’s largest fountains that displays a dazzling music, water and light show every evening.
  • The Art Institute of Chicago is on the western edge of Grant Park and is one of the premier art museums and schools in the United States.
  • The Museum Campus is a 57 acre space that was added on to Grant Park’s southeastern end. The Campus has three of the city’s best museums – Adler Planetarium, Field Museum of Natural History and Shedd Aquarium.
  • Grant Park also hosts the annual Taste of Chicago festival, which features food vendors throughout the park for one week every year. The Taste of Chicago draws a crowd of 2 million people or more!
  • When the Chicago Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup in 2013, the celebration rally was also held at Grant Park and amassed more than 2 million people for just one day!

When you’re in the Loop, Grant Park is the place to be!
