Development Update: Major River West Apartment and Retail Project Moving Forward

October 17, 2014

A large apartment and retail project planned for the site of the former Gonnella Baking Company at 1001 W. Chicago Avenue is moving forward. This afternoon the Chicago Plan Commission approved Seattle-based Security Properties’ proposal to bring 360 apartment units and 35,000 square feet of retail space to the 1.8 acre property. In addition to its retail and residential offerings, the development is set to include 300 car parking spaces, 200 bike parking spaces and a large “pedestrian-oriented landscaped plaza”, according to a press release. The project is designed by FitzGerald Associates, and based off of renderings spotted this past May, the development will be comprised of two midrise towers that will each stand on top of a large retail base. The development’s vast retail space will be anchored by a grocery tenant, although no particular grocer has been confirmed for the space. Security Properties will next take the proposal to the city’s Zoning Committee and City Council for final approval.
