Loyola University is coming closer to pulling the trigger on a long-in-the-works plan to build a new hotel at an empty parcel at Albion Avenue and Sheridan Road. According to DNAinfo, the university is partnering with Atira Hotels to bring a six story, 145 room Hampton Inn to the neighborhood. The building would also include ground floor retail managed by the university. The student body can breathe a collective sign of relief, however, since the development will not expand to the two-story building containing bar/package goods story/beer run savior Bruno’s. The owner refused Loyola’s offer to sell.

While a call to Tim McGuriman, Loyola’s associate vice president of capital planning, confirmed that no images or new renderings are ready to be shared to the press, neighbors were shown renderings Monday evening of a six-story hotel with a brick-and-metal facade, green roof and fifth-story terrace and event space with lake views.

The university has been exploring the idea for years, as the rendering above from February 2013 suggests, seeking to add more lodging for campus visitors. As Loyola’s building plans and aspirations expand — the school has spent more than $500 million on infrastructure since 2008, including the forthcoming Quinlan School of Business — it only makes sense that they’d need some extra beds nearby.
