Then & Now: Revisit Home Alone’s Iconic Suburban House 24 Years Later

Home Alone is one of the greatest Christmas movies of our generation, and it’s also probably the greatest Christmas movie to be filmed in the Chicago area. Written and produced by the legendary filmmaker John Hughes, Home Alone follows Hughes’ reoccurring trope of filming on location in Chicago’s North Shore suburbs. The movie’s backdrop was largely focused on a Georgian style home in suburban Winnetka, which was catapulted to A-list home celebrity status after starring in the 1990 film. However, the home has changed quite a bit since it made its film debut nearly 25 years ago. The home hit the market for the first time in over 20 years in 2011 with a $2.4 million ask. It took a number of price chops and sold a year later for $1.585 million. Although the iconic Home Alone house is no longer up for grabs, the house belonging to the McCallister’s spooky neighbor Old Man Marley hit the market earlier this year for $3.1 million. It has since been removed from the MLS. John Hughes fans even had a chance to purchase his 11,000 square foot Lake Forest home earlier this year.
