Andersonville – Top Neighborhood to Reside

If you’re new to the Chicago area or looking to move into a new home, look no further than Andersonville. With a population of 15,627, Andersonville brings small town living to the city of Chicago. Rated as one of the hottest neighborhoods of 2015 by Redfin, Andersonville is known for its diversity and charm. From specialty bakeries to unique boutiques and locally owned businesses, Andersonville has become one of the most popular neighborhoods in the city.. There is no shortage of restaurants along Clark Street where some of Chicago’s best food can be found. Transportation around the city and to and from Andersonville is easily accessible by the CTA Red Line with a stop at Berwyn or Bryn Mawr or by using each of Chicago’s northside highways.

According to Zillow.com, the median price of homes currently listed in Andersonville is $299,000, while the median price of sold homes is $249,000. If looking to rent, the median price is $1,800.

Andersonville is known for its devotion to second and third generation Swedes; however, other cultures are welcomed into the community with open arms.  There are Swedish-owned businesses alongside businesses owned by entrepreneurs of other cultures, which represents this area’s diversity.

Shopping and Dining

  • Fireside Restaurant: Located at 5739 N. Ravenswood St. in Chicago, Fireside has been open since 1904. Operating for 111 years, this restaurant continues to pride itself on good food and a great atmosphere. Open 365 days a year, there are many seating areas to choose from: by the fireplace in the dining room, the all-weather patio or on the front side café where all dogs are welcome.
  • Swedish Bakery: Located at 5348 N. Clark St., this bakery has been a staple in the Andersonville neighborhood since 1929. The bakery specializes in marzipan-draped princess tortes, custard cup sweet rolls and cardamom braids.
  • Hamburger Mary’s: This fun and energetic restaurant is located at 5400 N. Clark St. Known for its famous burgers and brew pub, Hamburger Mary’s serves the neighborhood’s most delicious meals. Patrons can choose from a wide variety of items, including the Big Kahuna Hawaiian, a half-pound burger with grilled pineapple, bacon, cheddar and jack cheeses, and a teriyaki glaze all topped with Mary’s sauce,  or the Mama Mia Grilled Cheese with cheddar, provolone and mozzarella cheeses with roma tomatoes and fresh basil on garlic sourdough bread. Once dinner is complete, head upstairs to Mary’s Attic for theater productions, DJs and MaryOke.
  • Andersonville Galleria: In the center of Andersonville’s retail area at 5247 N. Clark St. is a unique shopping experience. There are more than 90 retail shops that offer a wide variety of merchandise, from antiques and accessories to home furnishings, artwork, jewelry and gourmet foods. The majority of these retail shops are small independent retailers and locally owned businesses.

Entertainment and Recreation

  • Las Manos Gallery: Located at 1515 W. Foster Ave., this one of a kind gallery shows works by artists at all stages of their career. The gallery regularly hosts openings and many special events.
  • Neo-Futurist Theater: Located at 5153 N. Ashland Ave., this theater provides the audience with a unique experience. The plays are written and directed by the performers and based on their own life experiences. They incorporate living-newspaper, sports and poetry into a theatrical experience that is funny and poignant at times.

Historical Attractions:

  • Swedish American Museum: Since 1976, this museum has been an experience enjoyed by everyone. Located at 5211 N. Clark St., this museum is a must visit for all Chicago residents. There are art galleries, a genealogy center, immigration exhibit, a gift shop and an  interactive museum for children. In addition, there are multiple pictures and artifacts dating back to the 1800s when Swedes began immigrating to Chicago.
