A Weekend Affair: Love is in the Air in Chicago

Couple in winterValentine’s Day is this weekend, and people are searching for the perfect card, ordering roses and buying chocolates. Chicago has a plethora of fun and romantic options for you and your Valentine’s date to enjoy. This year, think outside of the box! Instead of just a romantic dinner, try one of these Valentine’s Day events happening this weekend. It will be a night you will never forget.

On Friday, Feb. 13, you and your date can experience European culture without having to leave the city! European Journey hosts many musical artists playing beautiful works from the Dutch, German and French repertoires. Enjoy listening to soprano vocals of Josefien Stoppelenburg as she performs Canteloube’s Songs of the Auvergene.  You will also have the chance to hear Sebastian Huydts’ Quartet for piano and strings. Bringing the evening to a close, Robert Schumann’s Quartet will be playing romantic melodies. This concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. at Nichols Concert Hall – Music Institute of Chicago. After the concert, a complimentary Meet and Mingle reception will be held at Vinic Wine Company. Enjoy meeting the artists and a glass of wine on the house! General admission begins at $35 with discounts available for young adults and students. Close to residents living near Raymond Park, European Journey will be held north of Chicago in Evanston. For residents coming from the city, take the Red Line to Howard and transfer to the Purple CTA line. Get off at Dempster and the venue will be just a few blocks away.

More than 10,000 orchids are blooming at The Orchid Show at the Chicago Botanic Garden. This year, you and your valentine can enjoy The Orchid Show Preview Evening. Celebrate the opening night on Friday, Feb. 13 with cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and music from the Chris Forte jazz ensemble. Tickets for this special night are $125 with valet parking included. On Valentine’s Day, enjoy walking hand-in-hand through nature’s beautiful art masterpieces. Learn about orchids and take classes including several about vanilla! Not only can you take your own pictures of this beautiful flower, but you can take in a wall lined with photography from Anne Belmont. Buy your date an orchid instead of a rose at the Orchid Marketplace or another fun gift from the Garden Shop. With so much to do, you will want to stay all day! Non-member tickets start at $10 for adults and $8 for seniors. Also just north of Chicago, the Chicago Botanic Gardens is located in Glencoe. Residents coming from central or south Chicago will take I-90 to I-94 to Lake Cook Road in Northbrook. Take the Lake Cook Road exit to US-41 until you arrive at the gardens. For residents coming from west of Chicago, take I-290 to I-90.

Neighborhoods of the World will continue this week in the Crystal Gardens at Navy Pier on Sunday, Feb. 15. This week, you can explore India’s culture right in the city! Partnering with Indo-American Heritage Museum and Consulate General of India, you can enjoy lively music, traditional dances, cuisine and crafts all from the Indian culture! This event is free to the public. For residents locally near North Lake Shore Drive or North Michigan, Navy Pier is just a short drive or a romantic walk away. Coming from south of Chicago, take I-90 towards Ohio Street and head east to the pier. For those who live on the west side of Chicago, take I-290 East.

For a romantic night on the water, you and your sweetheart can enjoy a special Valentine’s Day Cruise aboard Spirit. Enjoy a buffet-style dinner with entrées including roast salmon and tilapia with a garlic parsley crust, chicken parmesan meatballs, twice cooked beef short ribs, baked ziti and roast broccoli with chili flakes all while taking in the stunning view. Dance the night away under a blanket of stars and end the night with a champagne toast. Guests must board at 6:30 p.m., and the ship will set sail at 7 p.m. Tickets are priced from $99.90 per person with the buffet-style dinner, champagne and a rose included. Guests may also have the option to upgrade to Spirit’s Gold or Platinum package at an additional cost. Spirit Cruise is located right off of the Chicago River just east of North Michigan Avenue. For residents living near Grant Park, take North Columbus Drive to East Waters Street. If you are coming from the west near River Forest, take I-290 East to Lower Wacker Drive. Continue on North Wacker Drive to North Cityfront Plaza Drive.
