Visit the Chicago Botanic Garden Orchid Exhibit this Weekend

February 26, 2015

orchidAs another weekend approaches in Chicago, residents begin thinking about fun outings to plan. The city is lively and diverse where many exciting events happen at once, so sometimes it can be difficult to know which activity to choose. However, there is an area north of downtown Chicago that is sure to be the perfect weekend destination: Glencoe. This inviting community is located on the North Shore of Lake Michigan in Cook County. With a population of 8,700, the area provides visitors with a big city appeal while still keeping its hometown feel.

Glencoe is most famously known for its Botanic Garden where it’s beautiful on even the harshest of winter days. Visitors can walk from mounds of snow and layers of ice outside into bushes of flowers and scores of butterflies inside the garden. The Chicago Botanic Garden is truly a tropical escape from the frigid Chicago weather.

Currently, the Chicago Botanic Garden features The Orchid Show. The orchid exhibit opened on Valentine’s Day, and it continues until March 15. Orchid exhibit fills multiple tropical and semi-tropical greenhouses and connected rooms in the garden’s indoor Regenstein Center where most of the garden’s exhibitions take place. The Chicago Botanic Garden shipped more than 10,000 of the world’s largest family of flowering plants from Florida and California for this exhibit.

Last year, the orchid exhibit brought 25,000 people to the Garden, and this year it is predicted to be just as popular. This year’s orchid exhibit theme features an Asian influence with bamboo and decorative cloths. The exhibit also includes several classes on vanilla, which is a product of the seedpod of an orchid called Vanilla Planifolia.

Other highlights include a video of making “Thomas Jefferson’s vanilla ice cream,” various types of vanilla and perfumes to smell, many different displays of orchid breeds and even edible orchids!

The orchid exhibit also has classical and jazz music for patrons to enjoy as they travel through the garden paths of orchid flowers. It is an event of orchids, orchids and more orchids, and it’s going on now!

Time is running out to visit the tantalizing and breathtaking Orchid Exhibit at Chicago’s Botanic Garden. The show is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. until March 15. Tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for seniors 62 years and older and $8 for children ages 3 to 12. Parking is $25 per car. Members of the Botanic Garden will receive a lower ticket rate.
