Hands with screwdriver fixing a door hinge

Repairing a door hinge is one of many simple DIY fixes to improve your home.

When searching for a home, there’s a possibility that you’ll fall in love with a fixer-upper. However, home improvements can be expensive. Whether you’re buying a Chicago townhome or single-family home, there are several common repairs you can do yourself. Here are some DIY tips to help you fix some common issues for $10 or less.

  • Stained Bathtub: Stained tubs are a common problem and can make even the cleanest bathroom look grimy. Here’s a trick: Combine cream of tartar, baking soda and lemon juice into a paste that can help remove those nasty stains. Scrub the paste into the stain and let it sit for 30 minutes. Then, rinse well with water. Depending on how big the stain is you may have to repeat this process multiple times.
  • Stuck Windows: With good weather becoming more and more scarce, you may feel the urge to open your windows on those rare nice days. However, you may find that your windows are stuck. To help get your rigid windows moving, wipe silicone spray lubricant along their tracks. This method should work for most materials, including metal, wood and plastic and unstick your windows and let the crisp fall breeze inside.
  • Squeaky Door Hinges and Floors: Old homes often have doors and floors that squeak. Try these tips to maintain your home’s history without all the noise. For a squeaky door, spray WD-40 onto the hinges and swing the door back and forth to distribute lubricant over the whole hinge. To quiet squeaky wood floors, sprinkle talcum powder over the offending area. Dispense the powder evenly into the cracks. If you later decide to replace your floors, make sure all the powder is removed.

Whether you’re fixing up the house for your family, or preparing it for sale, these DIY projects can help make your home that much better. For more information on Chicago real estate go to www.chicagorealestateforum.com
