Chicago Is The Place To Be For Valentine’s Day

Love’s in the air. Celebrate with these local restaurants and activities.

Valentine’s Day is just a few days away, so now is the time to start planning your special evening. Whether you live in the suburbs or the city of Chicago, there are multiple options for you to choose from. Begin by looking in your own neighborhood; sometimes the best places are right around the corner! Here’s a list of the best restaurants and Valentine’s Day activities to help you get started.


Mercat a la Planxa: Bringing the taste of Barcelona to Michigan Ave, this Catalonia inspired restaurant is sure to please. Located at 638 S. Michigan Ave., the colorfully decorated second floor dining room overlooks Grant Park. Start out your evening with a pitcher of fruity sangria or a glass of sparkling Spanish wine. The menu features authentic Catalan dishes such as tapas, fresh seafood, grilled steaks, and various cheeses.

Osteria Via Stato: Located at 630 N. State St, this authentic Italian tavern offers patrons a warm and welcoming atmosphere. There is a fixed menu at $38.95 per person with a large selection of antipasti which includes lemony olives, veal meatballs in a tomato sauce or you can choose their homemade chicken sausage with herb breadcrumbs plus the entrée. There are also a la carte options such as hand rolled gnocchi with rosemary butter and tomato sauce or salmon with fingerling potatoes and black pepper bacon. For Valentine’s Day, Osteria Via Stato has a special menu for Saturday and Sunday where you can dine in the candle-lit dining room and enjoy a delicious four-course menu. Cost is $85 per person.

Gene & Georgetti: If you are looking for a fun, unique way to celebrate Valentine’s Day, head to The Estate at Gene & Georgetti, adjacent to the restaurant, for dinner and a show. The events venue will be transformed to a supper club featuring a four-course dinner and a show called “A Fine Romance” highlighting performances by some of Chicago’s top entertainers; Tom Michael, Joan Curto and Beckie Menzie. Tickets are $95 per person and seating begins at 5:30pm. Some of the menu items include bacon wrapped scallops, crab cakes, filet mignon with lobster tail, seafood risotto or classic duck a l ’orange.  For dessert you can choose Italian meringue with raspberry sauce or baked apples in a puff pastry topped with ice cream. If you would like to skip dinner and just see the show, the cost is $30 per person and starts at 7:30 p.m.  Gene & Georgetti is located at 9421 W. Higgins Road, Rosemont.

Sepia: Located at 1123 N. Jefferson St, Chicago, this contemporary yet rustic restaurant gives patrons an instant classic feeling.  Built from an 1890 print shop, Sepia showcases memorabilia from Chicago’s past. The décor features modern chandeliers, a floor to ceiling wine wall and custom millwork. The owner perfected the ambience for an evening dining in a warm and inviting restaurant. The menu includes an array of contemporary American cuisine. Items include potato gnocchi, Berkshire port and chocolate bourbon pudding. There is a special four-course tasting menu with such items as oysters Rockefeller and sea scallop with eggplant. For the main course there is stone bass, crawfish with a fingerling potato hash or pumpkin gnocchi with miso butter. Finish off your meal with chocolate marshmallow tart.


Ignite Glass Studios: For $75 per couple, enjoy an evening of creativity and Valentine’s Day celebration. Experience hands-on glassblowing for two at their workshop after hours. Each couple will get 30 minutes to create a heart shaped piece of glass artwork. Come early or stay later and enjoy complimentary chocolates and sparkling wine. This popular event is going on its fourth year and reservations are required. Ignite Glass Studio is located at 401 N. Armour St, Chicago.

The Second City Mainstage: Who doesn’t like a good laugh? Second City’s “Fool Me Twice, Déjà Vu” will do just that. This is one of Second City’s best running shows. Tickets are $23 per person and there isn’t a bad seat in the house. Second City is located at 1616 N. Wells St., Chicago.

Chicago Botanic Garden’s Orchid Show: What is more romantic than roaming through 10,000 varieties of orchids? Chicago Botanic Garden features an array of blooming orchids in their gallery and greenhouse for you to walk through at your own pace with the opportunity to purchase an orchid in the marketplace.  Located at 1000 Lake Cook Rd, Glencoe, it is easily accessible if you are driving up from Chicago by taking interstate 94 and taking the Lake Cook Rd exit. Cost is $8 for members and $10 for nonmembers plus the cost of parking for nonmembers. The show is extremely popular so it is recommended to purchase your tickets ahead of time.

It does not matter where in the city of Chicago you are located; there is something to plan for Valentine’s Day in any area. Start planning now and enjoy your evening out with your significant other!
