It’s Official! Let The Summer Fun Begin

May 25, 2016
Blue board with red flower and white writing says Memorial Day

Memorial Day is here and summer officially kicks off in the City of Chicago.

Memorial Day is just a few days away and there is plenty to do around the Chicago area. Whether you are looking for family activities or things to do with friends, there is something exciting for everyone.

Here are a few ideas to help jump start your summer:

1. Join thousands of Chicagoans as they help to salute and honor our war veterans. The annual Memorial Day Parade begins at noon on Saturday, May 28 on State Street, going south from Lake Street to Van Buren Street. Prior to the parade starting, there is a Wreath Laying Ceremony at the Eternal Flame at Daley Plaza at 11 a.m. This ceremony gives a special recognition to America’s fallen heroes along with the survivors.  Daley Plaza is located on Washington Street and Dearborn. Make sure to get there early to claim your spot.

2. The Randolph Street Market is open for business! If you love to shop and eat, this is the place to go. There are plenty of vendors that offer collections of antiques and vintage clothing along with booths from modern Chicago fashion designers. There is music, food and drinks for everyone to enjoy. The market is open May 25-26, then monthly through December.

3. If street festivals are what you crave, then head on down to the Belmont-Sheffield Music Festival. Located just steps from the Belmont Red Line “El” it is very easy to get to.  Featuring indie vendors, local tribute bands and local foods, there is something for everyone. There are no tickets needed to attend the festival, however a $5 gate donation is requested at the entrance. The festival takes place on Saturday and Sunday from noon to 10 p.m.

4. With the weather predicted to be sunny and warm, why not do some sightseeing and get some exercise at the same time? What better way to accomplish this than to explore the beautiful city of Chicago on two wheels? One of the various ways to explore is to rent one of the Divvy Bikes from the multiple bike-sharing stations that are located throughout the city. Once you start pedaling, head down to the 18 mile lakefront trail that will take you past nature sanctuaries, boardwalks, and boat harbors. Of course you can also ride along Chicago’s beaches which open this Memorial Day weekend.  If you would rather have someone show you around the city, then book a tour with Bobby’s Bike Hike. There are many options to choose from such as a night tour, a bites and brews tour, or a lakefront neighborhoods tour.  On Sunday, May 29, be one of 20,000 cyclists during the annual MB Bike the Drive when the city closes the waterfront Lake Shore Drive to all motorists and is only open to bicyclists. This event starts at 5:30 a.m.

5. Beach season officially begins Memorial Day weekend.  Put on some sunscreen and bring out your friends and family (including dogs!) to enjoy the 26 miles of open lakefront beaches. You can’t go wrong with a day in the sand and Lake Michigan.

6. Memorial Day weekend also marks the opening of local farmer’s markets. Support local farmers who come to sell their fresh vegetables, fruits and flowers. There are multiple farmer’s markets throughout Chicago. Here is the complete schedule of Chicago’s Farmer’s Markets.

7. Another big event kicking off this weekend is the Navy Pier fireworks.  Head down to Navy Pier to end your evening with a bang! There is a synchronized show every Saturday at 10:15 p.m. and Wednesdays at 9:30 p.m. If you are looking for an adventure to see the fireworks, the best seat in the house would be a view from Lake Michigan. Chicago Line offers fireworks cruises and there are other cruise lines to choose from as well.

Whether you are barbecuing, planning a picnic, or just want a relaxing weekend, Chicago offers many choices for everyone to enjoy. So make a trip to the city and have a fabulous Memorial Day weekend.
