Green Community to Host Earth Day Event

April 17, 2010

Thursday is Earth Day, and who better to throw a celebration than the country’s first green community.

The Village in Burns Harbor was the nation’s first green community.

Earth Day in the Village is set for April 22 from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. in northwest Indiana’s The Village in Burns Harbor. The event will offer free demonstrations, children’s activities, food and green giveaways.

Not only can you tour an energy-efficient green home during the event, but there will be several for sale, including the recently completed PCBA Green Education House. There’s still time to take advantage of the Federal Home Buyers Tax Credit and the completed homes are affordable, ranging in price from $172,000 to $250,000.

Jennifer Nebe from Save the Dunes Conservation Fund will talk about the effect the Village’s bioswale treatment plans and rain gardens have had on storm water management, Energy Diagnostics will discuss home energy audits and the equipment used during one, and Arnell Motors will be showcasing the GEM electric clean-air car.
