Need a computer for your Chicago home? Here’s a way to get one for free.

FreeGeek Chicago is a not-for-profit community that recycles used computers and parts and turns them into functioning computers for those who need them.

Free refurbished computerThe organization does most of its work with volunteers who are taught to take apart donated computers, test the parts and create refurbished systems called FreekBoxes.

After 24 hours of training and service in FreeGeek’s Earn-A-Box program, you will earn a FreekBox of your own.

Upcoming volunteer sessions:

*Friday, October 15; 10 to 3 p.m.

*Sunday, October 17; 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

*Friday, October 22; 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

*Sunday, October 24; 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

*Sunday, October 31; 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

If you don’t want to volunteer, you can also buy a computer or parts at the thrift store. Refurbished desktop computers start at $40 and laptops start at $75.
