Chicago Redesign Contest Down to Five Teams

November 26, 2011

Navy Pier Inc. has chosen the five teams that will bid for a contract to redesign some of the city’s most historic Chicago real estate.

The organization, which manages Navy Pier for the Metropolitan Pier and Exposition Authority, has launched a $155 million rehabilitation project of public spaces throughout the 95-year-old lakefront attraction, including Gateway Park at the west entrance, Crystal Gardens and Pier Park.

More than 52 teams entered this international contest to redesign the public spaces at the Pier. The five chosen finalist teams, which include architects, landscape artists, urban designers and other designers, will each receive a $50,000 stipend to prepare designs. Those designs are due on January 24 and will be unveiled to the public on February 2.

Navy Pier will announce the winning team later that month.

Here are the five design teams vying for the Navy Pier redesign job. The first team is the only one headed by a Chicago firm, though there are Chicago architects, landscape architects, urban designers and artists sprinkled throughout the teams.
