Surefire Benefits of Paying a Little More This Winter

January 12, 2012

Lots of people can be stubborn when it comes to winter weather, resisting turning the thermostat to heat for as long as possible. For those who own Chicago real estate, it is just as much about

saving money as a challenge to avoid turning up the heat. Ilyce Glink with the Equifax Finance Blog is here to let us all know that sometimes if we pay a little, we get a lot back when it comes to preparing for winter in her article, “

Winter Home Maintenance and Weatherproofing Tips.”

For the price of a tube of caulk and some of your time, you can definitely cut down on some of your energy woes. Homes develop cracks around the windows and doors naturally over time, which allow hot air to escape and cool your home down. You may also experience heat rising up through ceiling cracks to the roof. By simply adding some caulk over those cracks, you can prevent the heat from escaping both for comfort and lower energy bills.

Of course, if you’ve got old appliances, they can be the main source of higher energy bills. It may sound costly but in most cases there’s only so much that can be done with an old system, and upgrading to an Energy Star certified heating system can save you a lot of money in the long run.
