It’s Going to be a White and Wild Weekend

January 19, 2012

The big event of this weekend will undoubtedly be the weather around Chicagoland, where a Winter Weather Warning has been issued by the National Weather Service during most of Friday for the counties of Cook, Lake, McHenry, Kane, DeKalb, DuPage, Kendall and Will.

The chance of precipitation is 100 percent and the area could get 4 to 8 inches of snow. More snow is expected on Saturday, and temperatures won’t get higher than the 20s. Sunday’s forecast includes freezing rain.

So, you can hide inside your metro Chicago real estate over the next three days, but if you are brave and can weather the storm, here are some things going on around the area this weekend, some of them, incredibly, outside.

* * *

*Winter Bike to Work Day: This is Active Transportation Alliance’s annual event for you crazy cyclists. If you are one of them, pedal down to Daley Plaza in Chicago’s Loop from 6:30 to 9 a.m. on January 20, the 27th anniversary of the coldest day in Chicago’s history, when the official temperature was 27 degrees below zero. Everyone who stops by Daley Plaza this Friday morning can enjoy free coffee, tea and hot chocolate from Caribou and Cheesecake from Eli’s, get a complementary bike safety check and enter a raffle to win a folding bike. The first 50 bike commuters will get a free bike light or a free balaclava. We advise earmuffs for this event.

*Rock, Stroll, Shop Sheridan Road: Take a walk along the Sheridan Road corridor between Park and Central in Highland Park this weekend and enjoy ice sculptures, in-store and restaurant specials and a chance to win one of 15 prize packages, including the grand prize of an acoustic guitar. All you have to do is fill out a form at any participating store with the name of a song or music genre of which an ice sculpture reminds you. Hours are 3-5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 20-21. We advise wearing gloves, a hat and scarf.

*Polar Adventure Days: This seventh annual event will take place at Northerly Island, 1400 S. Linn White Dr., Chicago, where you can watch ice sculptures get created, meet live animals, make winter-themed crafts, drink hot chocolate and more on Saturday, Jan. 21 from noon to 4 p.m. The event is free; there is limited parking for $3 (cash only). We advise wearing every piece of clothing you own.

*Winter Block for Chicago’s Hip-Hop Arts: WBEZ’s 4th Annual event is set for Saturday, January 21 from noon to 11 p.m. at Metro, 3730 N. Clark St., Chicago. The party includes a street art and graffiti gallery, a film screening, a literary event, breakdancing exhibitions, the Emcee Olympics, the Hip-Hop Barbershop, live painting demonstrations, music by some of Chicago’s best DJs and more. Admission is free from noon to 6 p.m.; after 8 p.m. it’s $15 for general admission, $12 for WBEZ members and $10 for students. Finally, something indoors.

*The Northwest Home Improvement and Remodeling Expo: If you leave the comfort of your home for this event, you can bring some ideas back with you to make that home even more comfortable. There will be hundreds of exhibits and some of the best known local and national home improvement and landscaping companies on hand. There’s also kid’s activities, celebrity guests, live demonstrations, interactive exhibits and more. Admission and parking are free at Prairie Stone Sports & Wellness Center, 5050 Sedge Blvd., Hoffman Estates, on Friday, Jan. 20 from 4 to 8 p.m.; Saturday, Jan. 21 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday, Jan. 22 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Have a great, safe and warm weekend around Chicago!
