Habitat for Humanity Supports East Chicago Real Estate

August 19, 2012

habitat for humanityNew, affordable housing is the key to rebuilding most housing markets across the nation, and East Chicago is no different. Mayor Anthony Copeland is diligently working alongside groups such as Habitat for Humanity of NWI to increase the area’s inventory of single family homes.

Back in June, Habitat for Humanity officially broke ground on only its second home in the East Chicago region, and their first in the area in the last 20 years. The lucky homeowner however is not just receiving a new home at no cost because first they must put 300 hours of hard work into the home and attend classes designed to help new homeowners avoid the pitfalls of home ownership.

This first home is a sign of progress, and is part of a commitment that Mayor Copeland is making to his residents. Copeland has already allotted additional properties throughout the city to the Habitat for Humanity program in order to strengthen the city’s tax base and to stimulate single-family home ownership.

Habitat for Humanity has built more than 56 homes in the Lake County area to date, and in the process has relied on many local volunteers and college students. The nonprofit also opened its ReStore back in 2005 at 6114 W. Ridge Road in Gary, Indiana. The store sells new and gently used home building materials, appliances and furnishings to not only Habitat house residents, but all of the area’s home owners.
