The Latest Chicago Real Estate Eco-Building Trends

December 05, 2012

green chicago real estate One of the most popular building trends for 2013 is the expansion of ‘green’ Chicago real estate. In the past year, ‘green’ construction of single family homes made up 17 percent of the entire home building market, and this number is expected to double by 2016!

Here are some green building additions that we’ll be seeing more of in 2013.

  • Low E-Windows: If your home cannot hold a consistent temperature, you will end up paying too much for your energy bills. Low Emissivity (Low-E) windows are a smart choice because they emit low levels of thermal energy, and a home with low E-windows can reduce energy bills by as much as 20 percent!
  • Recycled Wood/Plastic Composite Lumber: The National Association of Home Builders reports that using recycled wood and lumber materials is more durable and less toxic than standard lumber. Recycled wood is also a great option for building an environmentally friendly deck or patio.
  • Vinyl Flooring with recycled PVC: The latest vinyl flooring has come a long way and is much more environmentally friendly! Most of today’s vinyl flooring uses materials that won’t break down in a landfill and make for easy installation.
Recycled Steel: Builders who use steel beams consume 75 percent less energy in the construction of their new homes plus reduce the risk of mold and rot.
  • Plant Based Polyurethane Rigid Foam: This type of foam is EPA certified and one of the most eco-friendly types of insulation being sold today.

Have you made the switch to any of these green building materials?
