Andersonville Recycles Hits Third Year of Responsible Disposal

April 10, 2013

Recycling for Chicago real estateThe Andersonville Recycles program is celebrating their third year of sorted, environmentally responsible waste disposal conveniently located along main thoroughfare Clark Street. The program is the only one of its kind to allow pedestrians to easily recycle glass, paper, plastic and aluminum easily on the go in a neighborhood commercial district.

The program is cooperative venture with the Chicago Resource Center, and has been hugely successful, with more than 22 tons of recyclable material diverted from area landfills. The Chicago Resource Center, a non-profit recycling and reuse organization that utilizes hand separation, has been able to recycle 99 percent of material given. For example, Andersonville Recycles has diverted nearly 17 tons of paper alone. That amount adds up to saving nine barrels of oil, 60 pounds of air pollutants, 7,000 gallons of water waste and roughly three cubic yards of landfill space.

The program has been a community effort with Anderson Recycles providing the operation, Chicago Resource Center taking care of the recycling, the bins purchased from a grant from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity and local businesses pitching in to help. Recognized by the Chicago Sun Times, Chicago Tribune and Mindful Metropolis, the Anderson Recycles effort could make a big difference if it was spread to more communities around the city!
