Going Green: Save the Environment and Save on Your Insurance Bill

September 30, 2013

Green homes save money on insuranceIf you’re passionate about protecting the environment, you know that every little energy-saving effort counts. Your efforts are making a difference on this earth, but did you also know that your efforts could make a difference in your wallet? And we’re not just talking about reduced energy costs, because now many insurance companies, from auto insurance to home insurance, offer discounts for going green. The insurance experts at the Equifax Finance blog explain in the recent article, “

Insurance Discounts Available for Consumers Who Go Green.”

Some auto and boat insurers offer discounts for owners of hybrid vehicles or vehicles that use alternative fuel. For those who own vehicles but choose not to drive often, saving both gas and Mother Earth, many insurers offer pay-as-you-drive discounts to keep mileage down. Sustainable and energy-efficient building materials or products and energy solutions often cost more upfront, but some insurers offer perks to homeowners who make green decisions. Homes built to the stringent LEED certification requirements may be eligible for discounts, and those who replace old appliances with energy-efficient ones may get financial incentives from their home insurance companies. Most insurers also give discounts to those who go paperless by paying their bills electronically. All of those envelopes, billing statements and stamps add up, so insurance companies pass on the savings to those who pay their bills online.

This list is not exhaustive, so be sure to check with your insurance providers to find out what kinds of savings you might be eligible for. For more insurance tips, visit the Equifax Finance blog, where you can also find helpful articles on topics like retirement, taxes, credit,
